BARWON FREEDOM from FLUORIDATION: consumer action group of citizens, including health professionals, in Geelong and the surrounding region, determined to end the social injustice, health risk and environmental risk of water fluoridation - enforced medication via the kitchen tap
health survey

State election - where to for the fluoride enforcers? Two candidates for the November 2010 Victorian state election clearly oppose compulsory fluoridation: Keith Oakley (Independent) and Peter Kavanagh (DLP). This list will grow if more announcements are made.

Mr Oakley of Belmont is standing as an independent candidate for South Barwon (southern Geelong and surf coast region). Stop Fluoridation is front and centre of his campaign - more about Mr Oakley in Media Releases below.

Mr Kavanagh is a sitting member of the Legislative Council for Western Victoria, and has a track record of attempting to pass an amendment to the Fluoridation Act, in 2007, that would give local communities a vote on fluoridation. Brumby Labor stopped the Bill going to the Lower House.

Who gave us fluoridation?

With many citizens suffering the ill effects of fluoride, and tens of thousands angry about Government’s broken promise to the community, BAFF is serious about this election. We are actively supporting Keith Oakley's campaign for South Barwon, and believe that Peter Kavanagh should be returned for his stand on fluoride. The fluoride chemical in our water was forced onto us by the Brumby government, including our local MPs Lisa Neville, Michael Crutchfield, Ian Trezise and John Eren. They deserve to be voted out. Supporters have opportunities to help - please download the VOLUNTEER FORM and mail to BAFF. See below for current announcements:

kangaroo with fluorosis cartoonKangaroos crippled by fluoride at Portland and northern Melbourne suburbs.
The Melbourne Age reported (21/2) a dramatic study showing that kangaroos living around several fluoride emitting industries are “pain-ridden” and suffering fluorosis, with “excessive bone growths, or lesions, on joints in the paws, ankles and calves.”
The Age report included an astonishing claim by an EPA director that while the fluoride is harmful to animals “the levels were safe for humans.” In fact there appears to be no evidence for it being safe. It is parallel to the situation around Geelong where an Alcoa smelter and Shell oil refinery pump fluoride pollution into the air, and residents breathe it and eat it if they are home growing vegies and fruit trees. The risk is magnified if residents are consuming fluoridated tap water since it is the 'total intake from all sources' that causes fluoride poisoning or long term damage. <see full Age story>

Citizens & Parliament being misled on fluoride by Dr Carnie (Chief Health Officer): Three very significant public documents from the latter part of 2009 condemn Dr John Carnie, Victoria's Chief Health Officer, for unprofessional conduct in misleading the Parliament and the community on water fluoridation:

Dr Carnie

(1) Most Recent - Carnie (above pic) claimed that fluoride consumed through fluoridation has virtually no side-effects for anyone, and that the study by Dr Elise Bassin (2006) linking the bone cancer osteosarcoma with fluoride consumpton, is of no concern for Victorian citizens. Any reader of this website, or the USA's National Research Council (2006) report on 'fluoride in drinking water' is aware that these claims are ridiculous and fly in the face of the best available science. <click here> for the Parliamentary Committee transcript of 1st December 2009 in which Carnie made these unsupportable claims in reply to questions from Mr Peter Kavanagh MLC, Member for Western Victoria.

(2) A letter to Health Minister Daniel Andrews calling on him to remove Dr Carnie, for Carnie's failure to answer key safety questions about fluoridation posed by the Mildura community, other Australian groups, and health professionals from around the world < click here >

(3) A landmark, full-page opinion article in Mildura's Sunraysia Daily, 18th September, shows that Dr Carnie's promotional article of 2nd September contains multiple, seriously misleading claims. The article is signed by 19 health professionals including eminent experts such as Dr Hardy Limeback DDS, PhD, past president of the Canadian Association for Dental Research, Dr Doug Everingham, former Australian Federal Minister for Health, and Prof Paul Connett (pictured below Dr Carnie). The authors ask Dr Carnie a series of questions that he is yet to answer in any of his fluoridation promotional efforts in Geelong, Warrnambool, the DHS website or anywhere around Victoria. Crowd at Parliament House

Parliament House Rally to Stop Fluoridation, 29th July 2009 - 50 to 100 Geelong region people sent the Health Minister Andrews and Premier Brumby the message that "Water fluoridation is unscientific, unethical, unsafe & UNWANTED - Stop It Now!" The Rally was joined by another 50 or so people from Melbourne and other parts of Victoria including Warrnambool, Daylesford, Castlemaine and Gippsland. Minister Andrews refused to leave the House to meet the delegation and receive the Open Letter. Upper House member for Western Victoria Peter Kavanagh came out from the House immediately after Question Time and addressed the Rally, saying that he believed communities should make their own decision on issues like fluoridation, and that he had put such a Bill to the House in 2007. The Labor Government, and Liberals, refused to sponsor the passage of the Bill into the Lower House after it was passed in the Legislative Council. Upper House member for Western Victoria David Koch, appeared as the Rally was winding up and spoke with some of the attendees. Geelong region MPs such as Lisa Neville and Michael Crutchfield ignored the Rally, though some faces (possibly theirs) were spotted peering out the windows of Parliament House. When Minister Andrews refused to appear, Peter Kavanagh MLC agreed to deliver the Open Letter to the Health Minister <click to see Open Letter>. The Geelong community, and Victoria, waits to see his reply. The Health Minister was also delivered the compelling DVD of eminent scientists titled Professional Perspectives on Water Fluoridation, which can be viewed on the homepage of www.fluoridealert.org

Toxic fluoride entering our water now - is it making you sick?

Barwon Water, with support from the Victorian Government's DHS, has proceeded against the WILL of the Geelong, Bellarine and Surf Coast communities to commence adding fluorosilicic acid (fluoride) to the piped water supply. The poison additive allegedly commenced soon afterJune 22, for the alleged purpose of assisting the teeth of some children (most children had good teeth anyway, prior to fluoridation). Barwon Water is not publicizing what the level of fluoride is up to yet. It is probable that it will not be up to 1ppm (1 milligram per litre) till some weeks after June 22. BaFF may be able to report some independent lab tests here before too long.

The thousands of concerned people in the region are reporting to BAFF that they are doing several things: (1) spending fortunes on now purchasing bottle spring or rain water, or hi-tech filtration equipment (2) informing Barwon Water that they cannot in good conscience pay the 'water volume' component of their water bills, with some people issuing Notices of Demand that Barwon Water pay their 'fluoride avoidance' costs. When BAFF can complete a thorough enough consumer survey it will report on its findings regarding filtration systems. Meanwhile Noble's pureau water - www.noblebeverages.com - guarantees fluoride-free water, and even comments on the unfortunate and illegitimate fluoridation of Geelong on its website.

If you or an associate or family member are genuinely 'fluoride sensitive', or hypersensitive to the toxicity of fluoridated water, a good guide to detecting their health reactions is the Dutch studies in the 1970s, outlined in Dr Hans Moolenburg's court affidavit <click here> or the book Fluoride Fatigue, by NZ doctor Bruce Spittle, available at Carmoora Clinic, 343 Moorabool Street. You need to do careful trial and error testing, on and off of tap water, to determine this.

Tabloid headlines, “scares” and “threats” cloud real issues in Geelong fluoride controversy

On 22 & 23 June, Geelong and national media were struck with a blitz of tabloid headlines like “Fluoride extremists strike again” (G Advertiser 23/6) and MP Michael Crutchfield likening opposition to fluoridation with “terrorism”, ........... <click here for full piece>
