White wash

I AM flabbergasted by the story (''Teeth bared in bleach row'', 16/8)

of the Australian Dental Association demanding a law to give dentists

sole right to provide teeth-whitening treatments.

Dental fluorosis, or discolouration of the teeth, is caused by fluoride

and is estimated to affect up to 40 per cent of children. Fluoride is not

only used in dental surgeries, but water fluoridation is actively supported

by the ADA.

How cynical, then, that dentists should demand the sole right to repair

the damage they have had a hand in causing. And at nearly 10 times the

cost of independent therapists.

Dentists sell take-home kits too, so they are violating their own advice

that ''the procedure should be carried out only in a clinic''. Talk about hypocrisy.
